The Seeliger Effect
Also known as the opposition surge, the Seeliger effect is the dramatic, sudden brightening of a rough surface (like Saturn's rings or the Moon) when illuminated from directly behind the observer. It occurs because shadows disappear at zero-degree phase angles and light backscatters directly toward the source!
